【Grooming Guide】How to Trim a Dog's Quick
Prepare the necessary tools
The dog's quick grows longer as the nails grow. Once the quick is too long, trimming the dog's nails can easily cause bleeding. The more this happens, the more hesitant the owner becomes to trim the nails, and the dog eventually becomes a "thousand-year-old monster," which greatly affects the dog's appearance. Therefore, trimming the quick is quite necessary.
Suitable pets: Dogs
Grooming preparation:
It is best to put a head cover or muzzle on the dog first
Steps
1. First, put a head cover or muzzle on the dog because trimming the quick will definitely cause pain, and the dog might bite, so safety measures are essential.
2. Have one person hold the dog steady: use the left hand to hug the dog and hold one of its front legs, clamp the dog's hindquarters under the left armpit, and use the right hand to hold the dog's head. Be careful not to apply too much force to avoid restricting breathing or causing more struggle.
3. Pour some styptic powder in a bottle cap for use. The person trimming should put on disposable gloves and begin clipping the nails.
4. Do not trim the quick too close to the nail root; keep some length appropriately. After clipping, bleeding often occurs. At this time, apply a little styptic powder and press the wound for 30 seconds to 1 minute. If bleeding stops, release and continue clipping the other nails in the same way as the first.
5. After trimming, let the dog rest for a while. Once the dog's mood stabilizes and nails no longer bleed, the dog can be set down.
After trimming the quick, the dog’s nails should still be trimmed regularly
Tips
1. Since trimming the quick causes pain, holding the dog properly is key. Make sure the dog is securely fixed and cannot move, but avoid holding too tight as the dog might struggle due to discomfort.
2. Actually, trimming the quick means moving its position backward, which makes future nail clipping easier and prevents bleeding. However, it is not a one-time solution. If the owner neglects nail trimming in the future, the quick can grow longer again along with the nails. So, after trimming the quick, keep trimming the dog’s nails regularly.
