【Grooming Guide】How to Clean the Ear Canal of Small Dogs
Ear Hair Removal
Compared to medium and large dogs, small dogs are more prone to having excessively long ear hair. If owners do not regularly remove ear hair and clean the ear canal, the likelihood of dogs contracting ear mites will greatly increase. Even if the dog hasn’t gotten ear mites, if the ear canal is not cleaned for a long time, the dog will scratch its ears due to itching. So regular ear canal cleaning is very necessary.
1. Suitable Pets: Small Dogs
2. Grooming Preparation:
3. Operation Steps:
1. First, pour an appropriate amount of ear hair removal powder into the dog's ear, then gently massage the base of the dog’s ear to evenly distribute the powder inside the ear. After massaging for about 30 seconds, you can begin removing the ear hair.
2. Flip the dog’s ear and first remove the excess outer ear hair, so that we can better observe the inside condition. Then slowly remove the ear hair inside using hemostatic forceps.
Before ear cleaning, first drip some ear washing liquid, or directly dip the hemostatic forceps holding cotton into it.
3. After confirming that the ear hair is thoroughly removed, start cleaning the ear canal. Drip a few drops of ear cleaning solution into the dog's ear canal, then gently massage the base of the dog's ear. Next, clamp a small piece of cotton with the hemostatic forceps, fix the cotton on both sides, and rotate the forceps with the right hand so that the cotton is securely fixed on the tip of the forceps. Make sure to fully wrap the tip of the forceps with cotton to avoid damaging the ear canal walls during ear cleaning.
4. Apart from dripping ear liquid into the dog's ear first, you can also directly dip the cotton-covered forceps into the ear cleaning solution before cleaning. The depth of ear cleaning can be deeper – since the ear canal of dogs is L-shaped, we will not touch the ear drum.
5. If the dog's ear is not very dirty, you only need to wipe once with the cotton dipped in ear drops. Afterwards, you can wipe directly with dry cotton. If it is relatively dirty, you may use the ear drops multiple times. Generally, once there is no visible dirt on the cotton, no further wiping is needed.
6. Repeat the above steps to clean the other ear.
Cotton must be firmly fixed to prevent it from falling into the dog's ear canal
4. Tips
1. If the dog is afraid of having ear hair removed, it is best to have someone hold the dog firmly to avoid biting due to pain.
2. Make sure the cotton is firmly fixed on the hemostatic forceps. Otherwise, if the cotton falls into the dog's ear, it will be a troublesome problem.
