Common Types of Combs and Their Uses
There are many types of pet combs on the market, each with different functions for different hair problems. Owners should choose suitable combs based on their pet's hair type. Commonly used combs for grooming cats and dogs include pin combs, flat combs, undercoat combs, and detangling combs (knives).
1. Pin Comb:

Pin combs are used for grooming many long-haired, fluffy, and curly pets, such as Chow Chows, Poodles, Bichons, Shih Tzus (detailed introduction), which make the pet's hair more fluffy and light.
Pin combs come in large and small sizes, which can be chosen according to the size of your pet. Small pin combs can be chosen for small dogs and cats, while larger pin combs with bigger panels can be chosen for medium and large dogs. This makes grooming easier for the owner and more comfortable for the pet.
Since pin comb teeth are relatively short, it is difficult to comb the hair close to the roots when grooming cats and dogs. When using a pin comb, you can comb layer by layer, from hair tips to roots, to keep the hair loose and breathable without hurting your pet. Gently combing against the hair growth direction can create a fluffy effect.
Precautions: The pin tips are quite sharp, so be careful when grooming sensitive areas with thin skin, such as eyes, ears, and belly, to avoid poking your pet's skin. Also, be careful not to poke yourself.
2. Flat Comb, Wide-tooth Comb:

The most widely used comb, basically suitable for all cats and dogs to tidy up messy hair, remove loose hair and dirt, especially good for pets with longer hair to comb smoothly.
Wide-tooth combs have varying teeth spacing: some dense, some wide. When choosing, consider your pet's hair thickness and length. For pets with thick, dense, and long hair, start with a wide-tooth comb to detangle, then use a comb with narrower teeth or another comb to groom. This is because dense hair tends to knot and dense teeth are harder to comb through. Fine-tooth wide-tooth combs make the hair smoother and make your pet look neater and more beautiful.
Usage:If your pet has very thick hair, comb layer by layer to avoid hurting the pet, combing in the direction of hair growth.
3. Undercoat Comb:

During seasonal shedding, the undercoat comb is a great helper. It effectively removes dead hair and undercoat that the pet has shed without harming healthy hair, solving the problem that dead hair is hard to clean.
Usage: Frequency should not be too high. First, use a flat comb/wide-tooth comb to smooth the pet's hair, then use the undercoat comb. When using, keep the comb teeth as parallel to the skin as possible (do not let teeth face the skin vertically), comb in the direction of hair texture.
Be careful not to comb the same area too much; just remove the shed undercoat.
4. Detangling Comb (Knife):

As the name suggests, it mainly works on tangled hair of long-haired pets. The comb teeth have metal blades that can cut tangled hair.
Usage: Comb following the direction of the pet's hair growth. To avoid cutting too much hair, do not comb backwards. Use once a week or every other week. Hold the tangled hair, then gently comb the exposed part with the detangling comb. For hard knots, do not pull aggressively to avoid breaking down the fluff; instead, hold the roots and comb gently. The fluff breaks easily when it meets the blade, so apply moderate force while combing.
5. Massage Comb

The massage comb features a massaging function that effectively promotes blood circulation in cats and dogs' skin and relieves pet stress. Additionally, it can remove loose hair during massaging, suitable for all cats and dogs.
Massage combs generally have rounded pin tips that won’t harm the skin, providing comfort during grooming and relieving pets’ muscle and mental fatigue.
The usage is simple: comb along the direction of hair growth. It can be used daily.
6. Comprehensive Comb

For owner convenience in carrying and storage, many manufacturers combine different functions into one comb, with different effects on the front and back sides, such as pin comb + massage comb, wide and narrow teeth combined wide-tooth comb, etc.
6. Others

Besides the commonly mentioned combs above, there are many other pet-specific combs, such as rake combs, massage combs for bathing, flea combs for removing fleas, etc. Owners can choose according to their pet's actual hair conditions.
