Care Knowledge of the Lakeland Terrier
Lakeland Terrier (Detailed Introduction)

Like other dogs, the Lakeland Terrier does not require frequent bathing. In winter, bathing once every half month is sufficient; in summer, once a week is enough. This is because the pH of a dog’s skin differs from that of humans; human skin tends to be acidic, while dog skin is more alkaline and much thinner. Frequent bathing will destroy its natural protective oils and cause various skin diseases. When bathing and grooming a Lakeland Terrier, we often need to clean the dog’s ears and eyes. So, what daily care should we pay attention to?
Ear cleaning involves two main tasks: removing dirt from the ear flap and cleaning the ear canal. The dog’s ear canal easily accumulates wax, dust, or moisture. It is necessary to keep the inside of the dog’s ear clean and dry. If not regularly cleaned, dirt and moisture in the ear canal can easily cause inflammation.
Cleaning the outer ear flap is relatively easy, but cleaning the ear canal requires caution. You can use a cotton swab dipped in a little olive oil to gently wipe inward bit by bit. The cotton swab should not be too long; use the other hand to hold the ear while slowly wiping until very clean. If there is a large amount of earwax in the outer ear canal, you can put in one drop of 2% boric acid solution to soften it, then carefully remove it with tweezers. When the dog shakes its head, immediately withdraw the tweezers to avoid damaging the eardrum or ear canal mucosa.
After cleaning, if there is inflammation, pus, or parasitic lice or fleas, medication can be used. If there are no other symptoms, sprinkle a bit of boric acid powder to keep the ear dry. In winter, puppies with very short hair around the ears are prone to frostbite and need to have a little oil massaged on regularly.
Daily Eye Care for the Lakeland Terrier
Dogs with large or protruding eyes are prone to irritation and injury, so special attention is needed. Generally, wash the eyes once a day to remove dust and eye discharge. For eye cleaning, you can gently wipe away the eye gunk at the corner of the eye with a wet cloth or use a cotton ball dipped in 2% boric acid solution to wipe it off. Both tap water and eye drops are suitable for washing the eyes.
A small amount of dry eye discharge often accumulates near the dog’s eye corners. Because of excessive eye gland secretion and frequent tearing, it is necessary to clean the eyes regularly. The best way to remove tear stains is to use eye drops or wash with boric acid solution. To prepare a 2% boric acid solution, dissolve 2 grams of boric acid powder in 100 ml of warm water.
For dry eye discharge, wipe clean with a damp cotton ball, but using cotton balls can cause lint to stick to the eye surface. For excessive secretions, wash them away with boric acid solution. Be careful during rinsing, as if dropped on white fur, it will leave stains.
If the eyes are diseased, use eye drops or promptly seek veterinary treatment.
As for Lakeland Terrier grooming, it is generally done every three to four months depending on the situation, as their coat is relatively coarse and harsh. Daily grooming is very necessary.
