How to Care for Sick Dogs
Proper Dietary Care

After becoming ill, a dog’s resistance to the outside world drops significantly, and many adverse reactions appear. Therefore, sick dogs require careful attention from their owners. Diseases are divided into medical and surgical categories, and care methods differ accordingly.

1. Care for Surgical Diseases

Dogs with surgical diseases are generally injured or have undergone surgery. These dogs should be given easily digestible food, and appropriate antibacterial drugs should be administered regularly to prevent bacterial infections. During the recovery period, dogs with wounds or surgery will experience itching as their wounds heal. At this time, dogs will lick or scratch their wounds, so it is essential to fit them with an Elizabethan collar and keep their nails trimmed.

If a dog is able to scratch its wound with its limbs, it is best to restrict their limbs or put socks on their feet. This can effectively improve the problem of dogs scratching their wounds.

2. Care for Medical Diseases

For dogs with medical diseases, extra attention should be paid to diet and care. If the dog has persistent vomiting or diarrhea, it is best to withhold food and water for a period. Once the dog's condition slightly improves, feed some porridge and gradually restore the diet.

Do not give medication indiscriminately, as random drug use is completely harmful and may cause poisoning. Therefore, it is necessary to confirm the disease before administering appropriate treatment. If intravenous fluids are needed, they should be given carefully. Whether for puppies or adult dogs, the infusion speed should not be too fast; otherwise, it will place a heavy burden on the kidneys and heart and may cause vomiting.

Additionally, some diseases cause the dog’s body temperature to drop, so keep them warm, especially in winter. Whether for surgical or medical diseases, maintaining a clean environment is very important. Avoid letting the dog live in a dirty environment to prevent worsening the condition.
