The Alaskan sled dog is one of the oldest sled dogs. Its name comes from an Inuit tribe of the Eskimos called the Malamute, a tribe living on the shore of western Alaska called Kotzebue. Before Alaska became part of the United States, this region was called Alashak or Alyeska, which translates to "vast land," a name given by the Russians who discovered this area.
