What is an ear hematoma?
An ear hematoma refers to swelling formed in the ear flap after blood accumulates within the ear cartilage plate. It can occur in both dogs and cats, characterized by a fluctuating, fluid-filled swelling on the concave surface of the ear flap. The size of the swelling varies among cases; some are as small as a peanut, while others may affect the entire ear, causing the affected ear to become very thickened. Originally upright ears may droop as a result. Therefore, when you notice a sudden swelling in your cat’s ear that feels as if there is fluid inside, you can basically confirm your cat has an ear hematoma. Suffering from an ear hematoma is very painful for cats, often severely impacting their appetite and making them irritable. If not treated promptly, the hematoma can be scratched open by the cat, easily leading to infection and ear deformity.
