What to Do When Cats Bite, Methods to Correct Bad Habits
Nowadays, many office workers like to keep a small pet they like to accompany themselves and fill the empty room with some vitality and warmth. However, animals are still different from humans, so some living habits cause our cute little pets to often bring some small troubles to their owners, such as dogs destroying the house and cats liking to bite. Today, we will teach everyone how to correct the bad habit of kittens biting.
Whether they are canines or felines, they learn and accumulate hunting skills during playtime. So, as their owners and partners, we undoubtedly become the training targets of cats. Therefore, when your cat is still a little kitten, it is recommended that you often play with the kitten using cat toys such as a teaser wand or laser pointer, so they will not treat you as their practice target.
But there is another situation where your kitten suddenly bites you while you are petting it. At this time, do not rush to scold or hit it. You only need to turn your back and stop paying attention to it. Note! We mean completely ignoring it. After about 15-20 minutes, wait until the cat calms down, then you can try petting it again. If it still bites you, walk away again and ignore it. When it interacts with you continuously for more than ten minutes without biting, you should give it some food as a reward accordingly. This way, your cat will realize that if it bites, it will lose you, but if it behaves obediently and does not bite, it will receive your reward and lots of love.
Because all actions of kittens come from their instincts, scolding them when they do something wrong will only scare them and will not serve as a teaching method; it will only make them more hostile towards you. So, teaching kittens requires patience and a gradual approach.
As for training adult cats, we can reprimand them when they do something wrong. Let them understand that such behavior makes you very angry. Then, when they do well, remember to give them some small rewards, such as their favorite dried fish snacks~ and praise them gently in a soft tone. Over time, cats will realize that good behavior makes you happy and that they can get their favorite food.
