Health Indicators of Kitten Growth
Persian Cat
Weight is a health indicator
Kittens that have just been born are mostly clean, tidy, and plump. With the attentive and frequent care of the mother cat, they almost always appear healthy and strong, spending their days either nursing or sleeping soundly.
Cat owners please pay attention?! When checking kittens during this period, the main focus is on establishing a complete weight record for them. Cat parents can prepare a more precise scale at home, record the weight once after twelve hours of birth, then record accurately once a day for the following fourteen days, and remember to keep the full records; because when a newborn’s health encounters problems, weight gain reduction or even weight loss is often the first warning sign.
Pay attention to kitten warming work
Kittens weigh about 100 grams at birth, and their weight will double after about two weeks. For kittens less than two weeks old, the normal heart rate is above 200 beats per minute, and the breathing rate is about 15–35 breaths per minute. The body temperature of newborn kittens is relatively low, about 35–36℃, and will slowly rise within 1 to 2 weeks after birth, reaching about 37.7℃ at four weeks old.
Kittens have pain perception at birth, but the neuro-muscular reflexes related to pain perception develop only at 7 days old, so never leave the young kittens alone on a heating pad. Since young kittens that need warming without mother cat care require safe warming tools such as hot water bottles, blankets, or towels, these are preferable because they are less likely to cause kitten burns.
