Advancing in Games: Cat Training Is No Longer Monotonous

Do we often feel that cats are idle at home, lazy by nature, far different from the image of catching mice and walking on eaves as imagined? Indeed, domestic cats have gradually lost their wild nature, becoming delicate and lacking exercise. To help cats regain their agility, continuous training is necessary.

However, cat training often makes owners very troubled, mainly because some rigid training methods cause cats to develop resistance, making implementation very difficult. But training is essential; it means fitness for cats, letting them exercise and strengthen their physique, which can also prevent some diseases, such as those caused by obesity. If conventional training methods do not work, we must use other ways to stimulate cats' interest.

Have owners noticed that cats enjoy playing jumping and tracking games? At the same time, these two types of games help cats develop good muscle growth during their development. So prepare some easy-to-move toys in advance, such as ping pong balls, spring balls, feather balls, etc. But small objects like glass balls that cats can swallow should not be given, or they could do anything. Regular use of these toys to play with kittens not only helps them practice jumping and ambushing appropriately but also prevents cats from using family members' bodies for practice.

  1. Tracking Game

This game is very fun and brings enjoyment to both the owner and the cat. We can place the cat next to us and put some favorite food (not too much) in a corner of the room. When the cat desperately searches for the food, quickly slip into a corner where it cannot see you, then softly call its name. When it runs to you, give it a reward and praise it verbally. The premise of playing this game continuously is persistence; if repeated every day, the cat will think the owner is playing a game with it.

  2. Jumping Game

Everyone has likely played this game before. In a darkened room, shine a beam of light on the wall or floor and let the cat chase it to exercise its jumping ability. But ensure there are no threatening objects in the room and prevent it from knocking things over while running. There are many devices that produce laser beams, and many cat teaser wands now have this function.

  3. Aerobic Exercise

First, have a toy mouse, then tie the mouse to a slipper with a thin string. Walk slowly and leisurely on the floor, making sure the cat can see you. After a few steps, you'll find the cat can't resist and stands up to chase the toy mouse. Once it gets used to exercising on flat floors, you can play this game around corners, room bends, and stairs. Once it catches the mouse, give an immediate reward, such as praise or a small treat. Increase the activity level when the cat gets familiar, and both of you will have lots of fun.

Of course, safety must also be considered when playing with cats. We often see people getting scratched or bitten accidentally while playing with cats, so we need to pay attention before training or exercising. For example, in spring, cats, dogs, and other small animals enter their mating season, becoming irritable and prone to aggression. Many children are bitten or scratched by their pets at home. It's best not to train at this time. Also, be observant of the cat’s emotions; avoid touching pets when they are eating or agitated to prevent unnecessary injuries.

In short, cat training is best started from a young age. Owners should cultivate good habits in cats from kittenhood, avoiding teasing them with their hands, especially not putting fingers near their mouths and then suddenly pulling them away. This action makes cats regard your hand as prey, instinctively pouncing, scratching, and biting. Those who can afford it might consider raising two cats simultaneously. Two cats can keep each other company, play well together, will not be lonely when the owner is away, and their interest in “attacking” people will greatly decrease because they have playmates.
