What Breed Is the Gradient Cat?

The gradient cat is improved from the British Shorthair, but the two are not the same breed. Generally, when people mention the gradient cat, it refers to the result of breeding between the British Shorthair and the Chinchilla cat, then further cultivated and improved. Initially, the bred cats were silver gradients, and during the silver gradient breeding process, some cats experienced a genetic mutation—the original undercoat was white but mutated into golden yellow, and there is even a rarer blue-gold color.

Gradient cat—a rare breed within British Shorthairs. Its body tends to be plump, with short but powerful limbs, short yet dense fur, and a large, round head. The personality is particularly gentle, friendly to people, and easy to raise. The currently bred breed not only retains the solid and friendly body shape and big face of the old British Shorthair but also evolved to develop more enchanting big eyes—round, filled with blue or green, adding a sense of mystery; combined with a strong, robust appearance, it is even more lovable.

The gradient cat’s fur colors include many varieties such as golden, blue-golden, golden spotted, silver, and silver spotted, etc.

The fur color of the gradient cat can change noticeably depending on the season and age—sometimes, the gradient color in kittens is quite dull, and it may not be until they are three years old that their natural most beautiful colors and posture fully show.

Cats in the gradient series always maintain curiosity towards external things, are bold and not shy, gentle to other creatures, and are not prone to tantrums or loud noise—this is definitely not their “style.” Gradient cats depend on their owners, love closeness, and often like to rest on their owner's lap like well-behaved babies. They also enjoy playing with their owners.

It should be mentioned here that no matter what cat it is, a lack of long-term exercise easily causes obesity. When a cat’s body becomes too “fat,” besides the appearance issue, health problems arise—it easily leads to related diseases. Therefore, cat owners at home are recommended to play with their cats for half an hour each day. This not only promotes emotional bonding but also reduces the incidence of obesity-related illnesses.
