Treatment of Cat Burns

Oriental Shorthair Cat
1. Local Therapy
(1) Superficial burns: Only cleanse and treat the wound. After trimming the hair, use mild disinfectants (0.05% chlorhexidine), surgical povidone-iodine solution, or saline to clean the wound and apply cool compresses.
(2) Deep burns: For burns within 2 hours after injury, cool the wound with 3~17℃ (around 15℃ is ideal) for 30 minutes.
(3) For burn treatment, perform as sterilely as during surgery. Thoroughly clean the area with the disinfectants mentioned above.
(4) Perform careful wound debridement. Although it is difficult to determine the burn extent in early onset, remove large amounts of necrotic tissue. When blisters form, puncture them to release contents but do not remove the blister membrane.
(5) To prevent infection and promote granulation tissue formation, apply 2 to 3 layers of 0.5% silver nitrate solution (using gauze moistened with it or 1% sulfadiazine), antibacterial ointment in white petroleum jelly, or gentamicin sulfate ointment to the wound. Also, use warm water baths or showers to clean the wound and remove necrotic tissue.
(6) Skin grafting: When the burn area is large, remove necrotic tissue and perform skin grafting as soon as possible. At this time, granulation tissue exudate is minimal and favorable to health.
