Treatment for Cat Diarrhea
American Shorthair Cat
First of all, Fluoroquinolones and berberine should NOT be used to treat cats with diarrhea! Because some medicines are safe for humans but toxic to cats, and these two drugs are such cases! Remember this!
For cats with diarrhea, it is important to first understand the cause. There are many reasons for cat diarrhea, and proper treatment depends on the cause:
1. Indigestion
This is the most common cause of diarrhea, especially in kittens under six months old. Simple indigestion is also called soft stool.
a: Change of food
Kittens’ digestive systems are very delicate because their digestive enzymes are lacking. Feeding canned food or pure meat to kittens under three months can easily cause indigestion. Poor digestion leads to diarrhea, and if untreated, it will worsen and cause dehydration, which is very dangerous. So cat parents must carefully handle this condition. If you are sure there is no illness (clean home environment and food, and the kitten has been vaccinated), you can stop feeding canned food and meat, which are hard to digest. Give two tablets of Lactase powder per feeding, two to three times a day, and improvement can be seen in one day.
Additionally, you can try "Mammy Love" (multivitamin lactobacillus powder, available at pharmacies, made for infants). Use one small tube mixed in cat food powder or dissolved and fed directly, twice a day. Its effect is similar to Lactase powder. Another option is "Enterolysin," which has the same function. You can choose whichever is convenient among the three.
If necessary, control the diet by fasting for about a day initially, and avoid overfeeding at subsequent meals. This allows the digestive system to recover. Don't worry too much about this diarrhea; regulation is key :)
