Tips to Make Pet Cats Execute Tasks
Persian Cat
Owners who want their pet cats to obediently follow their commands can only achieve this through training, enabling cats to develop certain habits and recognize the specific meanings of commands given by the owner. Training should start when the cat is a kitten. Therefore, for many cat owners, understanding the cat’s temperament is the first step, then choosing the most appropriate training method based on needs. The following methods are available:
1. Inducement Training: Owners can use food, objects, or their own actions to guide cats to perform the correct behavior. Inducement training is more suitable for training kittens.
2. Force Training: Force training means the owner forcibly compels the cat to perform the correct behavior. For example, to train a cat to lie down, the owner issues the "lie down" command while physically pressing the cat down to force it to lie down. After several repetitions, the cat quickly forms a conditioned reflex to the "lie down" command and will automatically lie down when hearing it. When using this method, owners should consider the cat’s temperament since cats prefer gentle methods. Cats respond poorly to harsh commands; the fiercer the command, the less likely the cat is to obey.
3. Reward Training: After the cat performs the correct behavior, the owner can give appropriate rewards to reinforce the habit of following commands and strengthen the conditioned reflex. Rewards can include food, praise, and petting. Rewarding must be combined with forcing to be effective. After forcing a correct action, an immediate reward should be given. The level of reward should increase as training difficulty rises. However, too frequent or easily earned rewards can make cats indifferent to minor rewards, reducing their enthusiasm for training.
4. Punishment Training: When noticing bad habits, timely punishments should be used. Punishment methods include scolding, tapping, etc. For example, when the cat misbehaves, a water spray can be used as a deterrent, or saying "No" loudly to discourage the bad behavior.
To ensure cats accurately follow commands, a period of training is necessary. Owners should maintain patience and repeatedly give commands until the cat becomes very familiar with them, which means the training is successful. (Source:PetsZone)
