Three Major Misconceptions about Pet Cat Sterilization Surgery

1. Awakening Injection
Never give it! The awakening injection (he mentioned a very professional name that I didn’t remember) basically works by exciting the nerves of a cat under anesthesia. Although it can help some cats come out of the coma state after anesthesia, it is very likely to cause increased intracranial pressure leading to death. It is better to accurately control the anesthesia dosage and let the cat wake up naturally.
2. Vasectomy
Cats can also be vasectomized, which is generally for male cats. Male cats after vasectomy will still go into heat and retain all the behavioral characteristics of the heat period (such as wanting to go outside to find mates, spraying urine around the home, etc.). For cats living indoors, vasectomy is not recommended. In Japan, vasectomy is typically performed uniformly on stray cats, provided that after surgery they are not adopted but continue to live as strays. The purpose is to control the local stray cat population. This approach differs from the ideal of giving cats the best happiness as advocated by Tumaocat. Also, in our country, the social environment means that stray animals face not only environmental pressures but more hardships from most people who dislike animals, especially stray ones. Therefore, I also disagree with releasing sterilized cats back to the wild, which relates to our social environment.
Although vasectomy controls the number of stray animals within a certain range, it cannot prevent the rampant sexual behavior in the wild that spreads feline immunodeficiency (an immune system disease in cats, mainly transmitted sexually) and feline leukemia. You can refer to National Geographic's "The Secret Diary of Cats" to gain a new understanding.
Overall, there is no good comparison between testicle removal and vasectomy; it entirely depends on your expectations for the cat’s life and how you want it to best fit into your life. However, from a health perspective, doctors generally choose direct removal to avoid possible health risks.
3. Don’t think that male cat sterilization is the same as castration
This is a very negative idea and a remnant of our traditional biases! Dr. Pan, a surgical expert in Beijing, said: “Male cat sterilization surgery is not like castration but similar to male vasectomy; all functions remain, and the cat can still have sexual behaviors. The difference is that there are no active sperm and no reproductive capability.”
