Teach Your Cat to Learn Life Etiquette for Living Together
Owning a beautiful and friendly cat is the wish of many cat owners. When friends visit, if your cat generously comes out to greet and see them off, playing with the guests, it will surely add a lot of fun. Conversely, if it hides under the bed or on top of the cabinet refusing to see anyone, or even trembles all over, still terrified after the guests leave, it is a regret for both your cat and you.
The Importance of Early Socialization
Because cats live in relatively closed environments and have limited contact with the outside world, cat owners must arrange enough pleasant social opportunities during their kittens’ youth so they can develop a healthy mindset to coexist harmoniously with people and other animals.
The sensitive period for socialization is from 2 weeks to 7 weeks old. Letting kittens learn socialization early can prevent behavioral problems in adulthood, and establishing good habits is much easier than correcting bad ones later.
Adapting to Family Life at a Young Age
From two weeks old, cats should receive affection from their owners several times a day for a few minutes each time, gradually increasing the affection’s duration and frequency. While petting, speak gently to your cat. If possible, ask relatives and friends to also pet the cat, or have the owner wear hats, sunglasses, or other disguises to help the cat get used to different appearances.
During this period, kittens will be weaned and start eating solid food. They gradually begin exploring their surroundings, increasing playtime, showing strong curiosity, and their movements become more coordinated. Owners should seize this opportunity to give them ample life experiences to reduce fear of unfamiliar things.
Introduce noisy household items like vacuum cleaners, washing machines, and doorbells to your cat gradually to help them adapt to the home environment. Sounds like dog barking and car horns should also be frequently experienced.
Do Not Be Too Proactive When Interacting with Cats
Cats are independent animals; don’t be too forward when making friends with them. If your cat missed the optimal social period or has had unpleasant experiences leaving psychological shadows, only approach it when it is very relaxed. You can talk softly to your cat during mealtime to let it understand your goodwill. The petting method mentioned above is also effective, but don’t rush to touch it, do not make loud noises or sudden movements to scare the cat. A patient and gentle attitude will surely win your cat’s favor and trust.
Treat Cats According to Their Individuality
Every cat’s personality, likes, and living habits are different. Some cats are lively and like exploring the house; some are gentle lovers who like to cuddle in their owner’s arms; others prefer to be solitary... Different cats are fascinated by different toys. Understanding each cat’s characteristics lets you arrange daily activities more effectively, and the process of learning about your cat is also very interesting for owners.
Training Cats Without Punishment
Cats are naturally proud; punishment has little effect in cultivating a good cat. Punishing after the fact is even more harmful because cats won’t associate the punishment with the earlier misbehavior, but will feel confused by the owner’s attitude. Arbitrary hitting and scolding further damage the cat’s feelings and trust towards the owner. So when a cat misbehaves, a timely "No!" is enough to let it understand your likes and dislikes. Patience, attentiveness, and scientific methods will definitely shape a lovely cat you can be proud of. A calm and confident personality will also let your cat experience more joy in life and better coexist harmoniously with humans.
