Training British Shorthair Cats to Use the Flush Toilet
British Shorthair Cat
British Shorthair cats love cleanliness. It is quite easy to let them urinate and defecate in a fixed litter box. The litter box must be cleaned frequently, and the bedding needs to be changed regularly. However, even so, the smell from the cat’s feces is still strong and very unpleasant. Some people ask, some house cats urinate and defecate in the flush toilet, which is enviable. How can we train them to do this?
Before training, place a plastic board (or replace it with a wooden board) under the seat ring of the flush toilet, then cover the plastic or wooden board with an appropriate amount of sand, ash, sawdust, or other bedding. When you notice the cat is about to relieve itself, immediately bring it to the flush toilet. Soon, it will relieve itself on its own. After several patient training sessions, the cat will gradually develop the habit of urinating and defecating on the flush toilet with bedding. Then gradually reduce the bedding on the plastic or wooden board. During this process, the cat will quickly understand that it should stand on the toilet seat to relieve itself, rather than standing on the lower bedding inside the toilet. Then gradually remove all the bedding and drill a hole in the plastic board to allow urine to drain down. If the bedding is removed too early and the cat refuses to relieve itself on the toilet seat, training must be restarted. In short, only after the cat develops the habit of standing on the toilet seat to relieve itself can the plastic or wooden board be removed.
During the training process, some details must be heeded. First, replace bedding soiled by urine or feces daily and always keep the flush toilet clean. Doing this can accelerate the training process. Second, during training, humans must not use the flush toilet at the same time, especially when the cat is using it; do not disturb or interrupt the cat. Third, some cats may accidentally slip inside the flush toilet. These cats generally won’t use the toilet again. In this case, the owner must start training from the beginning until the cat learns to relieve itself on the flush toilet.
