　　Some people think that only communicate with each other through purring, meowing, and roaring. In fact, cats have many ways of communicating; they use sounds, movements, ears, mouth, and tail to express themselves, and they have a rich vocabulary of communication. Mother cats especially do so, as they need to use various sounds to communicate with their kittens and to teach and discipline them.

    Cats purr when they are happy or satisfied, and the purring sounds vary greatly among different cats. We can easily distinguish purring from harsh roaring sounds. The roaring sound is made by cats or dogs resisting intruders.

    The meowing sound made by cats is mainly to attract attention.

    If the meow is short and high-pitched, it means the cat is looking for its owner inside the house. If the meow is prolonged and loud, it means the cat wants to open a door or is hungry. When a cat is confined in a travel basket or stepped on its tail, it will emit an angry loud scream.

    When a cat sits on the windowsill observing birds outside, it makes a clicking sound somewhere between a meow and a purr.

    A cat's body language is displayed through its posture. Usually, you can use your intuition to judge the cat’s feelings and needs. The posture of a content cat is the easiest to identify because it completely relaxes and squints its eyes. A relaxed cat will stretch its limbs and continuously wave its paws. At this time, you can gently scratch it, and it will lie on its back with all four paws up, inviting you to continue petting it. Sometimes cats also knead and purr when satisfied. This is because when they were nursing, they needed to knead to stimulate milk flow.
