Understand a cat's inner feelings from three actions

Norwegian Forest Cat

When a first shows signs of bad behavior, stopping it immediately is very effective. If it starts patting the leaves of houseplants or the player’s electric wires, that is a sign it is about to chew. At this time, you need to stop it—stop the bad behavior at its initial stage while telling it “No playing!” or “Go!” loudly, loud enough to make it stop what it’s doing and look at you or get scared away. When it runs away and sits quietly, you can go encourage it.

If you scare it into running away or hiding, never chase it or forcibly pull it back to punish it, as this will only confuse and frighten it. When it appears again, tell it what you expect: don’t jump on the kitchen table, but how about this tall and cute climbing frame? When it jumps onto the cat climbing frame by itself, encourage it again.

If conditions allow, you can adopt a “replacement” strategy, using a cat climbing frame instead of the refrigerator top, a scratching board instead of the sofa, and an old sock tied into a knot for teeth grinding instead of wires. Scratching and biting behaviors are natural instincts passed down for generations and cannot be completely eliminated. Therefore, you need to find an appropriate solution to reach a compromise between you and the cat.

If loudly shouting at the cat or replacement strategies don’t work, you can use “disgust techniques.” When the cat scratches the sofa, spray it with a water gun or spray bottle so it associates the unpleasant feeling of being sprayed with the action of scratching the sofa. You can also put a few coins in an empty metal can and cover it. Each time you find it trying to jump on the dining table, shake the can beside it—the noise is enough to scare it away. After repeating this several times, it will remember.
