Introduction to Methods for Training Cats to Perform Ring Jumping
Russian Blue Cat
Cats can also perform ring jumping if trained properly. If you want your cat to impress your friends and family, you can learn the training methods introduced in this article.
The ring used for training cats to jump can be an embroidery bamboo hoop or a thick iron wire formed into a ring about 30 centimeters in diameter. During training, first place the ring flat on the ground, positioned between the person and the cat, then continuously give the "jump" command to the cat.
If the cat passes through the ring, immediately reward it with food; if it goes around the side, give a gentle scolding. After many repetitions, the cat will learn to pass through the ring when it hears the "jump" command.
Next, gradually raise the ring above the ground to force the cat to jump through it. Reward the cat each time it jumps through. Do not raise the ring too high at first; sometimes the cat may be hesitant to jump when raised. The owner can lure the cat with food placed inside the ring while continually giving the "jump" command. Once the cat jumps through once, it will become much easier afterwards.
After a period of training, gradually reduce the food rewards. When the cat can jump through a ring held 30-60 centimeters above ground on command without food rewards, the training is successful. (Source:PetsZone)
