Cats really like to use their claws to scratch objects, such as tree trunks or wooden items. Sometimes they also scratch on the floor. When cats scratch objects, they have a habit of secreting a sticky, fragrant liquid. During scratching, this secretion is rubbed onto the surface of the scratched object, and the scent of these secretions attracts cats to return to the same spot to scratch again. For domestic cats, without proper training, they often scratch and damage furniture and floors.

　　Before training, prepare a wooden post about 70 cm long and about 20 cm thick, fixed upright near the cat’s resting place to facilitate scratching. The texture of the post should be solid. During training, bring the kitten to the wooden post, hold its two front legs with both hands, and place its two front paws on the wooden post, simulating the cat’s scratching motion. This way, the secretion from the glands on the cat’s paws will be transferred onto the post. After multiple training sessions, combined with the scent attracting the cat, the cat will go to the wooden post to scratch. After developing this habit, the cat will no longer scratch furniture.

　　For cats that have already developed the habit of scratching furniture, during training you should first cover the scratched furniture with plastic panels, wooden boards, etc. Then place a sturdy wooden post or plank at an appropriate position in front of the scratched furniture. Use the same method mentioned above to train the cat to scratch the wooden post or plank. After the cat develops the habit of scratching the post or plank, you can slowly move the post or plank to a place you think is appropriate. The distance moved each time should not be too large; 5 to 10 centimeters is suitable, and you must never rush.
