How to Punish a Cat After It Makes a Mistake
Pet cats sometimes take advantage of their owner’s affection and become bold and reckless. They may occupy territory at home, urinate anywhere, scratch new furniture, and all kinds of bad habits will show. If the owner wants the cat to stop these wrong behaviors and obey household rules, they must master the following punishment methods to make the cat afraid to make mistakes again.
First, the cat should be criticized and educated immediately after making a mistake. When the cat behaves wrongly, the owner should stop it immediately and loudly say “No, not allowed.” Cats can distinguish the owner's mood through tone of voice. Gradually, the cat will understand that when it makes a mistake again, it will be scolded loudly. Thus, making the cat feel a sense of awe will make it less likely to err.
Second, criticism and education must be consistent every time the cat makes a mistake. The owner must insist on controlling the cat’s behavior, and whenever the cat makes a mistake, it should be reprimanded right away. Avoid sparing criticism each time, otherwise the cat will never develop a sense of respect and might become reckless, never correcting its bad habits.
Third, severe corporal punishment must not be used to punish the cat. After making a mistake, the cat can be lightly tapped on the bottom, lightly patted on the head, or sprayed with water using a spray bottle. These mild punishments are acceptable. However, heavy corporal punishments like punching and kicking are absolutely not recommended. Mild discipline helps the cat understand which actions are right or wrong and correct bad behaviors. Severe punishment can hurt the cat’s self-esteem, and if the cat cannot bear this humiliation, it may run away from home, avoiding the place that makes it sad and upset.
Necessary punishment can be given after a cat makes a mistake. When the cat performs a correct behavior, the owner should also generously praise it. Combining punishment with praise will help the cat quickly learn which behaviors are good and which are mistakes.
