How to Prevent Hairball Disease in Cats
Burmese Cat
Cats swallow hair that enters the stomach while grooming. A small portion can be excreted through feces, but hairballs that cannot be discharged remain between the stomach and the duodenum. Hairballs cause gastrointestinal blockage, making cats uncomfortable. The body’s natural reaction causes cats to cough violently in an attempt to expel the hairballs. Additionally, cats may eat toilet paper or grass. Sometimes, large amounts of hair can be found in vomit and feces. Dry heaving causes considerable discomfort to cats.
To reduce the distress caused by violent coughing due to hairballs, cat parents should regularly groom their cats to reduce the amount of hair they swallow. Feed hairball paste on a schedule or prepare a pot of cat grass for the cat. Also, increasing the cat’s exercise can promote normal gastrointestinal motility, enhancing the ability to expel hair and effectively preventing the formation of digestive tract hairballs.
