How to Make Cats 'Come When Called'
Cats have aloof personalities and are generally not easy to train, especially when it comes to things they are unwilling to do. However, cats are also very rule-abiding, so once some rules are established, they will consciously follow them. We can take advantage of this to train cats accordingly.
For example, to train a cat to "come when called," stand opposite the cat holding a treat it likes, and say the word "come." When the cat walks over, let it eat the treat and gently pat or stroke it to show praise. If the cat is unwilling to come, show the treat to it again and give the "come" command. After multiple training sessions, just issuing the "come" command, even without food, will cause the cat to obediently come over. At this point, further training can be done by simultaneously making a hand gesture when saying "come." If the cat comes over, reward it, forming a conditioned reflex. Gradually, only the hand gesture without sound can be used; if the cat responds, continue to offer treats and affection. After some time, the cat will recognize it as a rule that whenever the owner gestures, it will quickly come over.
