How to Do a Good Job Training Ragdoll Cats

Due to the personality of cats themselves, training cats has become a relatively difficult task. Although we often see many well-trained dogs performing various tricks, it is hard to see a well-trained cat. While we do not have to deliberately demand how well the cat can do, some basic training must still be completed.

  1. Find the right time for training

  1. Education should start early

The juvenile period is a good time for cat training and correcting bad habits. Relatively speaking, cats during this period have faster acceptance abilities. Also, cats raised from a young age have better feelings toward their owners, so their acceptance may be better.

  2. Training can be done before meals

Training the cat when it is hungry and then using food as a reward may improve their enthusiasm for training, making the effect relatively better.

  3. Clarify attitude

Combining firmness and kindness is very important. For cats with a strong attitude, it is necessary to be strict, criticize timely, and use a stern tone. For personalities like Ragdoll cats (detailed introduction), the attitude should be firm, but the tone can be slightly softer.

  4. Training should not be rushed and requires patience

Training cats itself is not an easy task, so one should avoid seeking quick success. Training cats requires enough patience; multiple training sessions will definitely improve the situation. Each training session should not last too long, as cats easily lose patience.

  5. Maintain a good environment

A good environment is very important for cats. If it’s too noisy, cats dislike it and cannot concentrate, which may greatly reduce training effectiveness. Cats are also very sensitive and may become alert to the environment, so they must feel completely safe.

  2. Training precautions

  1. Use food rewards appropriately

When cats complete an action or behave obediently, give them some treats as rewards. After a few fixed times, cats will know what makes the owner happy and how to get treats, forming this connection.

  2. Pay attention to commands

When using food to lure, also pair it with fixed commands. Consistency is very important. Do not use different commands for the same action; otherwise, cats will get confused. Let them associate the action with the command so that next time they hear this tone, they know what to do.

  Cultivate good eating habits

This should be standardized from the beginning. This is important both for habit and health reasons, so do not be negligent. Treat feeding should not be excessive, and food meant for humans should be fed as little as possible. Once cats get better food, their interest in previous poorer-quality food will drop significantly.

  Good defecation habits

Cats’ excrement has a strong odor. If they do not develop good defecation habits, the odor can easily fill the room. Therefore, during training, provide proper cat litter and litter boxes, and be sure to clean the litter regularly.

For Ragdoll cats, bad behavior habits need to be corrected by training, but we do not need to deliberately demand cats to complete difficult actions, as there is little practical use for them, and it would consume a large amount of time.
