How to Develop Social Skills for Pet Cats

Burmese Cat
A cat's living circle is very small, especially for indoor cats who mostly interact with their owners and furniture all day. Therefore, cat owners must arrange sufficient and enjoyable social opportunities for their kittens during early life, so they can harmoniously coexist with people or other animals with a healthy mindset.
The period from 2 to 7 weeks old is a sensitive stage for socialization in cats. Early social learning helps prevent behavioral problems in adulthood. It is much easier to establish good habits than to correct bad ones later.
1. Adaptation to Family Life in Early Life
From 2 weeks old, cats should receive affectionate petting from their owners several times a day, a few minutes each time, gradually increasing the duration and frequency. While petting, speak gently to the cat. If possible, ask friends or relatives to help pet the cat, or have the owner wear a hat, sunglasses, or other disguises so the cat gets used to different appearances.
During this period, the kitten will be weaned and start eating solid food. They will gradually begin to explore their surroundings, play more, demonstrate growing curiosity, and move more coordinatedly. Owners should seize this opportunity to provide rich life experiences to reduce fear of unfamiliar things.
Introduce noisy household items such as vacuums, washing machines, doorbells gradually to help cats adapt to the home environment. Sounds like dog barking and car horns should also be commonly experienced by them.
2. Don’t Be Too Forward
Cats are independent animals, so do not be overly forward when trying to befriend them. If your cat missed the best socialization period or has had unpleasant experiences leaving psychological shadows, approach it only when it is very relaxed. You can talk softly to it during mealtime to let the cat understand your goodwill. The petting method mentioned above is also effective, but don’t rush to touch it. Never be loud or make sudden, forceful movements that might scare the cat. A patient and gentle attitude will surely win the cat’s favor and trust. (Source:PetsZone)
