Prevention and Control of Abnormal Predatory Behavior in Cats

Norwegian Forest Cat
Cats' predatory behavior refers to their actions of chasing and capturing prey. Naturally, the main prey for cats are mice and rats. Additionally, they may also hunt grasshoppers, houseflies, lizards, birds, snakes, squirrels, gophers, field mice, rabbits, and so on.
The main manifestations of abnormal predatory behavior in cats are catching free-range chickens from the owner’s or neighbors’ households, bringing dead chickens or dead mice back home, chasing pet rabbits, or capturing caged chickens or birds. The following methods can be used for prevention and control:
A. Tie a bell around the cat’s neck. When the cat chases chickens or pet rabbits, the sound of the bell will alert the chickens or rabbits to reduce losses. Besides, the bell’s sound can also remind the owner to promptly stop the cat’s abnormal predatory behavior.
