Techniques for training cats to fetch things for you

Russian Blue Cat

Cats really like to use their paws to scratch objects such as tree trunks or wooden items. Sometimes they also scratch on the ground. When cats scratch objects, they have a habit of secreting a sticky scented liquid. During the scratching process, this secretion is applied to the surface of the scratched object. The smell of this sticky secretion attracts the cat to return to the same spot to scratch again. For indoor cats, if training is neglected, they often damage furniture or flooring by scratching.

Before training, prepare a wooden post about 70 cm long and 20 cm thick, fixed upright near the cat’s nest to facilitate scratching. The texture of the post should be solid. During training, bring the kitten to the post, hold the cat’s front legs with both hands, and place its two front paws on the wooden post, simulating the cat's scratching action. This allows the secretion from the cat’s paw glands to be applied to the post. After repeated training sessions and with the attraction of the secretion's scent, the cat will start scratching the post. Once the habit is developed, the cat will stop scratching the furniture.

For cats that have already developed the habit of scratching furniture, training should start by covering the furniture being scratched with plastic boards, wooden boards, or other materials. Then place a solid wooden post or board in an appropriate spot in front of the furniture being scratched. Train the cat with the same method to scratch the wooden post or board. Once the cat forms the habit of scratching the post or board, you can slowly move the post or board to a location you consider appropriate. The distance moved each time should not be too large—5 to 10 centimeters is recommended—and must never be rushed. (Source:PetsZone)
