If your cat has been free-range since it was young and habitually goes outside and returns home on time, then you don't need to worry about your cat’s exercise amount. On the contrary, if your cat stays indoors all the time and its living space is very small, as the owner, it is recommended to take time every day to bring it out for exercise! The following is a compilation of training tips for walking cats.

  Training tips for cat walking

Cats have strong instant burst strength, able to jump and dart around. There are many cars coming and going in residential communities, so when walking a cat, you must be able to control it and prevent it from running around wildly; otherwise, it will be difficult for the owner to catch it, and traffic accidents may occur. To prevent cats from running away during their "walk," a harness should be worn. Since domestic markets do not sell special walking leashes for cats, cat owners can use the smallest size dog harness. This kind of harness passes over the cat’s two front legs instead of directly around the neck, which is more comfortable and safer for cats. When putting the harness on the cat, be sure to adjust the tightness properly — not too tight, not too loose, otherwise the cat can wiggle out of the harness.

Cats initially do not get used to being restrained; as soon as the harness is put on, they lie on the ground and try various ways to escape. So don’t rush to "put it on." The owner should first drag the harness around the house to attract the cat's attention and let it chase it. After the cat gradually becomes familiar with this object, put the harness and leash separately, only letting the cat wear the harness (definitely indoors, not outside), allowing it to first get used to the feeling of wearing the harness.

Slowly, if the cat no longer resists the harness, the owner can try attaching the leash to the harness and walk it around inside the room, teaching it to slowly get used to this restraint. The first time you take the cat outside, do so in a safe spot downstairs or outside the home, don't walk too far, let the cat get used to the surrounding sounds and sights, and be sure to closely observe the cat’s reactions.

If the cat is very fearful, it is advised to give up on the idea of walking the cat outside and not force it. Excessive forcing will only make the cat scared, which might cause it to unintentionally injure the owner in panic and negatively affect the cat’s personality — something neither the owner nor the cat wants. How your cat behaves depends on its personality, so before using a leash to walk your cat, understand your cat and let it start walking on its own, rather than the owner dragging it.

Frequently taking cats out for walks is very beneficial to their physical and mental health. The most important thing about taking cats out for walks is not the owner’s happiness, but the cat’s happiness. It’s best to start training cats to go out for walks from kittenhood. First, train the cat to wear a collar and leash, letting the cat wander near your home first, then gradually lead it to farther places, allowing it to adapt to this kind of walking. Once the cat is accustomed, you can take it to the street or park for walks. If the cat is unwilling, don’t force it; try several times. (Source:PetsZone)
