Cultivating the Habit of Cats Loving Baths from a Young Age
American Shorthair Cat
Cats do not need frequent baths; only when their fur is too dirty or greasy do they need cleaning or bathing. White cats require baths more often than other colored cats. It is best to start bathing cats from a young age to help them develop the habit. Cats that have never been bathed may scratch or bite during bath time, making it difficult to complete the bath.
Before bathing a cat, all doors should be closed to prevent escape. It is best to use a wooden basin for bathing; if none is available, other basins can be used by placing a rubber mat inside so the cat can stand without slipping. If the cat is too afraid of water to bathe, you can put the cat in a bag and submerge it in water, while the owner massages its fur from outside the bag and finally rinses the fur with clean water. During bathing, avoid getting water into the cat’s eyes and ears.
If a cat is especially afraid of water baths, the owner can use a dry cleaning method to clean the fur and skin, which is only suitable for slightly dirty short-haired cats. The method is to heat 250–500 grams of bran to about 38.5℃, let the cat stand on newspaper, and rub the warm bran into the cat’s fur thoroughly. Finally, use a comb to remove the bran.
