Beware of Cat Fatty Liver

Chinchilla
Cat fatty liver, also called feline hepatic lipidosis, is different from human fatty liver. Cat fatty liver is unique to cats and currently one of the more common liver diseases in cats. Cat fatty liver can be primary or secondary. The cause of primary fatty liver is still unclear. Research suggests that primary feline fatty liver may be related to the cat liver’s metabolism of proteins and fats. When a cat's body lacks certain essential amino acids, such as arginine and methionine, it is very likely to develop fatty liver. Secondary cat fatty liver often occurs secondary to type II diabetes, cholangiohepatitis, extrahepatic biliary obstruction, suppurative cholangiohepatitis, pancreatitis, kidney diseases, tumors, hyperthyroidism, and other diseases. Clinical statistics show that obese cats have a higher chance of suffering from fatty liver.
