Winter Management of Puppies
Because winter temperatures are low, to prevent dogs from catching cold, we should try to limit their outdoor activities, especially for puppies that have not completed their vaccinations. Otherwise, if they catch a cold during this period, it can easily develop into more serious infectious diseases. Therefore, winter management for puppies must be done well.
1. Cold Protection and Warmth
In winter, the kennel temperature should be kept between 13—15℃. The kennel door can be covered with straw mats, and windows can be sealed with plastic sheets. For small puppy enclosures, warming measures similar to plastic greenhouses can be used. All wall cracks should be sealed to prevent drafts. If possible, infrared lamps can be used, and firewalls can be built between walls. Generally, dog beds should be provided with thick bedding that is frequently changed and dried to keep dry. On sunny and warm days, let dogs sunbathe more to strengthen exercise, enhance fitness, and improve disease resistance.
2. Dietary Attention
Some owners think dogs should be given warm water in winter, but this is unnecessary; ordinary clean water is sufficient. Extra attention should be paid to food freshness in winter, a problem often overlooked by many owners in this season. Before feeding, heating the food can prevent stomach upset caused by cold food and eliminate bacteria on the food surface.
3. Exercise
Although we should limit dogs’ outdoor activities, daily exercise is still essential. If dogs only alternate between eating and sleeping, obesity can easily occur. Therefore, we still need to set aside some time to exercise them and strengthen their physical condition.
