Many pet owners are troubled by their dogs’ skin problems, and dandruff is one of the common issues. Excessive dandruff not only makes dogs look unclean but also scatters all over the house. Owners have likely tried many methods to solve this problem, but if the root cause of the dandruff is not identified, blindly treating it will yield minimal results.

To improve dandruff issues, regular care is quite necessary:

1. Regular baths: Bathing is the most direct way to remove large patches of dandruff. Giving your dog a good bath can effectively remove the old flakes accumulated on the skin. Bathing shouldn’t be too frequent; generally, once every 1-2 weeks in summer is sufficient, and the frequency can be lower in winter. Be careful, as too frequent bathing might damage the oily protective layer on the dog’s fur. Use lukewarm water when bathing, avoid the eyes, and always remember to dry your dog’s damp coat after the bath.

2. Specialized shampoo can improve dandruff issues: Human shampoos generally cannot solve dog dandruff problems because the pH value of a dog’s coat differs from that of humans. Using the wrong shampoo can worsen dandruff. When bathing, let the foam stay on the dog’s body for several minutes so that the medicinal ingredients can fully take effect. Never use human anti-dandruff shampoo on your dog to avoid further irritation. For severe dandruff, it’s best not to use shampoos containing insecticidal ingredients, as these often dry the skin even more.

3. Coat spray: If the dog’s living environment is too dry, it can also cause a lot of dandruff. So buying some oily coat sprays at pet stores is a good idea. Spraying on the fur can effectively prevent excessive evaporation of moisture from the coat, thereby better avoiding excessive dandruff.

4. Moisturizing oil: Products ordinarily used for baby skin care can also help moisturize a dog’s skin and coat.

5. Regular brushing: Brushing your dog regularly can remove old dandruff and dead hair accumulated daily, and help distribute the natural oils secreted by the skin evenly across every inch of the skin. Many dandruff problems can naturally be resolved by frequent brushing.

6. Add some oil: One reason for increased dandruff might also be insufficient oil in the diet. Adding an appropriate amount of pet-specific fish oil to the diet is a good idea to help the skin restore normal metabolic function. Just half a spoon or one teaspoon of fish oil daily can show notable improvement.

7. Try changing the diet: Some poor-quality feeds do not meet the dog’s nutritional needs and cause poor hair health. Many dogs experience dandruff improvement naturally after switching to a more professional, higher-quality feed.

The above are relatively effective solutions for dogs under normal conditions. If the dog has a skin disease, relying solely on bathing and care will not help. Dandruff caused by skin disease can only be truly improved by treating the skin disease. Moreover, the treatment process for skin diseases usually takes a long time, so owners should not give up midway due to no immediate results; otherwise, the problem will never be resolved.

Therefore, if sick, treat the illness; if not sick, maintain regular care by bathing and brushing, using the correct shampoo, and keeping the environment moist. These are the effective measures to improve dandruff problems.
