What is the role of calcium in dog food?
Dog Food

Nutrition in dog food is generally somewhat known to owners from the packaging. Generally, if you want to choose highly nutritious dog food to help your dog develop and grow quickly, protein and fat are what you need to pay attention to. Similarly, for dog food, calcium is also a aspect that owners need to focus on. Calcium deficiency in dogs can cause multiple symptoms such as poor bone development.

The amount of calcium in food should be appropriate. Meat is the main source of calcium (also calcium carbonate and bone meal), but it can only provide a small amount of calcium. A 30kg German Shepherd needs to consume about 60kg of meat to meet calcium requirements. Of course, feeding a dog 60kg of meat is impossible.

The addition amount of vitamin D3 and other trace elements will affect calcium absorption. The amount of phosphorus also affects calcium's efficiency. Therefore, it is necessary to provide dogs with enough calcium in their diet, considering the appropriate phosphorus addition and vitamin D3 dosing.

Nutrients in commercial dog food are balanced, and the calcium content is also appropriate. Excessive additional calcium supplementation can cause stagnation of the internal regulatory system. When the calcium demand becomes very important (such as early pregnancy), for example in cases of spasms (convulsions) and other discomfort, calcium supplementation is needed, but it should be done under the guidance of a veterinarian.

If the dog already shows symptoms of calcium deficiency, then calcium supplementation is necessary. For example, calcium nutritional pastes optimize absorption and palatability, providing nutritional supplements suitable for dogs of all ages; they use easily absorbed scientific ratios, insist on selecting high-quality raw materials to improve absorption and reduce the chance of stones caused by calcium precipitation. It is good to keep some at home, as it can greatly help when the dog lacks calcium.
