Introduction to Eskimo Dog
Eskimo Dog

The Eskimo Dog is a diligent working dog, originating from the Arctic land, initially raised as a transport tool. It is very friendly to people, exuding a mature and noble temperament, making it a loving and loyal companion.

   1. Appearance Features
   1. Head
The head is wide and deep, not appearing rough or clumsy, with appropriate proportions to the body. The expression is gentle and full of friendliness. The eyes are slightly slanted in position on the head, brown in color, almond-shaped, and medium-sized. Darker eye color is better. Blue eyes are disqualified. The ears are moderate in size but appear slightly small compared to the head. The ears are triangular with slightly rounded tips. The ears are set widely apart, located toward the rear outside of the head, aligned with the outer corners of the eyes. When the ears are erect, they look as if they are standing on the head. The erect ears may tilt slightly forward, but when the dog is working, the ears sometimes fold toward the head. The head is wide between the ears and slightly raised, gradually narrowing and flattening from the top of the head toward the eyes, becoming relatively flat near the cheeks. There are slight wrinkles between the eyes. The contour lines of the head and muzzle resemble two straight lines slightly folding downward and connected. Compared to the head, the muzzle appears long and large, with width and depth gradually decreasing from the junction with the head toward the nose leather. Except for dogs with red coats, all other colors should have black nose leather, eye rims, and lips. Dogs with red coats are allowed to have brown nose leather, eye rims, and lips. Light-colored striped “snow nose” is acceptable. The lips are tightly closed. The upper and lower jaws are wide, with large teeth.
   2. Neck and Body
The neck is sturdy and slightly arched. The chest is quite developed. The body structure is simple but not short. The back is very straight, slightly sloping toward the pelvis. The waist is firm and muscular. The tail is located at the end of the spine. When not working, the tail curls over the back. Their tails do not curl tightly over the back, and the hair on the tail is not short like a brush. The Alaskan Malamute’s tail is covered with soft hair resembling wavy feathers.
The shoulders are moderately sloped; the front limb bones are sturdy and muscular, appearing very straight from the shoulder to the wrist when viewed from the front. From the side, the wrist is short, solid, and slightly tilted. The paws belong to the snowshoe type, tight and deep, with suitable footpads, appearing stable and simple. The paws are large, toes tight and slightly arched. Protective hair grows between the toes. The footpads are thick and tough; the nails are short and sturdy.
The hind legs are wide with very well-developed thigh muscles; the stifle is moderately angulated; the hock is moderately angulated and appropriately downward. Viewed from behind, whether standing or walking, the hind legs remain in the same line as the corresponding front legs, neither too far apart nor too close.
   3. Coat
The Eskimo Dog has an erect double coat, consisting of a dense undercoat and longer outer coat, with the outer coat passing through the undercoat to provide protection. The coat is straight, never curly or wavy. The neck has a noticeably mane-like ruff, more prominent in males than females. The outside of the ears is covered with short, smooth hair, and longer ear guard hairs grow at the front opening of the ears. The muzzle hair is short and smooth. The back of the front legs has feather-like fur. The feather-like fur on the hind legs extends to the hock. The tail is covered with abundant long hair. It is absolutely forbidden to trim the whiskers and body hair of the American Eskimo Dog; trimming will result in severe penalties. The only permissible trimming is to tidy the paws and behind the hocks.
Colors generally range from light gray to black and various degrees of red. Only one solid color is acceptable: pure white. White is the main color of the lower half of the body and is also distributed in spots on the legs, paws, and face. White markings on the forehead and collar or spots on the neck are attractive and acceptable.
   4. Gait
The Eskimo Dog's gait is steady, harmonious, and powerful. Considering its size and structure, it is quite agile. From the side, the strong driving force from the hindquarters is transmitted through the muscular waist to the forequarters. The forequarters receive this driving force from the rear, resulting in smooth strides. Viewed from the front or rear, the legs always maintain a straight line, neither too close nor too far apart. When running fast, the paws tend to move closer to the body's midline.
   2. Living Habits
It is a proactive and hardworking working dog in cold regions. Humans living in the freezing Arctic Circle must fight hunger and cold; hunting seals for food, warm leather, and fuel is inevitable. Siberian Sled Dogs are human assistants; after hunters catch seals, the sled dogs act as laborers, dragging heavy prey back to the village using sleds, serving as the most environmentally friendly and economical energy providers.
   3. Character Traits
Strong and suitable for cold places, famous as a working dog. The Eskimo Dog is very friendly, classified as a “friend dog” rather than a “loner dog.” It is a loyal and affectionate companion but generally gives an impression of nobility and maturity.
Whether for companionship or practical use, the Eskimo Dog can be your good partner.
