Understanding Dogs' Anal Glands

Dogs
Dogs' anal glands require regular cleaning; otherwise, problems such as anal gland inflammation may occur. So exactly where are dogs' anal glands located on their bodies? How should owners who like to care for their dogs at home clean them? Let me guide you to understand dogs' anal glands.
1. The anal glands are specialized secretory glands located slightly below the sides of the anus that secrete a unique, stimulating gas to mark territory. Basically, all carnivorous animals have them.
2. The anal glands are located at the 4 and 8 o'clock positions of the anus, with openings facing outward. Upon close observation, you can notice that when the anus contracts there is a pinhole-sized opening on each side, inside which gray-brown secretions are produced; these are the anal glands.
3. Inflammation of the anal glands can be divided into two types. The common one is anal gland blockage, caused by obstruction of the gland openings leading to secretion accumulation and swelling. The other is pain and discomfort caused by inflammation within the glands themselves. These two conditions often occur together.
4. As their owners, we should understand the importance of cleaning the anal glands, actively prevent problems, pay attention to daily health care, and detect issues early to prevent further deterioration.
