Teach You How to Brush a Sheltie's Teeth
Sheltie
Generally, when raising a Sheltie Sheepdog, you should brush its teeth 3-4 times a week to promptly clean the residues between its teeth, reduce bacterial growth, avoid bad breath, and prevent gingivitis, periodontal disease, and so on. During the raising process, we should start brushing the Sheltie puppy's teeth weekly from puppyhood. But what method can quickly and conveniently brush a Sheltie's teeth?
At the very beginning of brushing a Sheltie's teeth, it may resist and dislike or even avoid brushing. Therefore, during the dog's puppy period, the owner can often try gently wiping the teeth with a small gauze to let them gradually get used to the feeling of brushing. Then, as the Sheltie slowly accepts brushing, replace the gauze with a toothbrush and use professional pet toothpaste to brush the dog's teeth.
When officially brushing the teeth, first calm the Sheltie's emotions, then gently open its mouth, rinse with an appropriate amount of clean water or 1% saline, then apply a layer of toothpaste on the dog's teeth by hand, and gently rub with a toothbrush. The rubbing should be done at a 45-degree angle, continuously grinding back and forth between the teeth and gums to remove debris. After thoroughly cleaning the entire teeth, rinse with clean water.
To maintain the oral health of the Sheltie, besides the weekly brushing, in terms of diet, the owner should try to avoid sticky foods and prepare dry kibble or similar food, which is more effective for oral health. If possible, take the dog to the vet once a year for an oral checkup, tartar removal, and teeth cleaning. Also, prepare some chew sticks regularly to help the dog remove plaque from the teeth, achieving oral health maintenance.
