Solutions for Tibetan Mastiff Mite Infestation?

The Tibetan Mastiff is a very powerful large dog. Dogs always experience various illnesses, and mite disease is a very common condition for Tibetan Mastiffs. Mites on a Tibetan Mastiff can be somewhat troublesome. Usually, the dog's fur will be shaved off for treatment. Without the Tibetan Mastiff’s dense and flowing long fur, it may feel self-conscious.

Mites in Tibetan Mastiffs are inherited but not contagious. The usual onset period of mite disease is at 3-4 months, and it will not occur between 10-12 months. Currently, there is no cure for mites worldwide, only some medications to alleviate symptoms. Mite disease should be treated as early as possible. The earlier the diagnosis and treatment, the better the effect. If ivermectin injections are given in the early stage of onset, usually one or two injections will be effective, allowing the dog to suffer less and the owner to invest less effort.

2. If the mite infestation is already severe, be prepared for long-term treatment. Initially, red spots spread quickly, then cause pus, bleeding, scabbing, and pigmentation. For Tibetan Mastiffs with mite disease, daily hygiene must be paid attention to, keep the kennel clean, avoid contact with infected dogs, and try to reduce the dog’s exposure to dirty grass areas, especially in the spring, which is a high season for infectious diseases. Disinfection and hygiene measures should be well implemented. According to veterinarians, mites actually exist on every dog; only under certain conditions do mites reproduce massively and cause the dog to fall ill.

If a Tibetan Mastiff has mites, you can try this treatment method: Prescription: Cocculus 50g, Sichuan pepper 30g, Clove 30g, Szechuan lovage rhizome 30g, Sophora root 50g, Dictamnus dasycarpus 30g, Atractylodes 50g, Phellodendron 30g, Motherwort 20g, Wild chrysanthemum 30g, Honeysuckle vine 30g, Cicada slough 20g, Kochia seed 30g, Angelica 15g; Usage: boil with water for 20 minutes, preferably three times to get a more concentrated decoction and avoid waste. Strain and take the liquid, wait until it is warm, let the dog soak for 15 minutes—be sure to soak long enough—then rinse the dog thoroughly with warm clean water, making sure no medicine remains on the dog’s body. No need for shampoo, then dry with a blower. For severe cases, soak every other day, signs should improve after three or four treatments; mild cases may improve after one or two treatments.

Although mite disease is not very serious, it is better to seek treatment at a veterinary hospital. Veterinarians have much more experience, and the hospital has comprehensive protective measures making treatment easier. It is best to board the infected Tibetan Mastiff at a pet store because mites can spread everywhere.

Hopefully, all Tibetan Mastiffs can safely avoid the mite disaster, and owners must pay more attention!
