Precautions for Exercising with Dogs
Dog Exercise
Pet dogs are different from stray or free-range dogs; many pet dogs' activity range is almost limited to indoors or the yard, lacking enough space to exercise. We all know that moderate exercise helps dogs' physical and mental health, so as the owner, you must take your dog out for exercise. However, there are some precautions when exercising, otherwise it can easily backfire. Let’s review them below.
1. Prepare well before going out. Be sure to bring clean drinking water to prevent your dog from getting thirsty. Always bring a leash to avoid many dangers and troubles.
2. Since you have taken your dog out, give it enough time to exercise. Generally, the exercise time depends on the dog’s size: small dogs should exercise about 15 minutes daily, medium dogs around 30 minutes, and large dogs about 1 hour daily. Be sure to ensure adequate exercise for your dog.
3. Pay attention to exercise timing, preferably in the morning or evening when it’s not too hot. Also, do not exercise your dog right after eating to prevent digestive issues. Likewise, do not take your dog out when it is very hungry, as it might ingest unclean things or even poison.
4. Don’t just do a single type of exercise with your dog; understand your dog’s characteristics to choose suitable activities. Walking, jogging, hiking, throwing balls or Frisbees are all good exercises to try.
5. After exercising, don’t place your dog in a drafty area. Dogs are prone to catching a cold when exposed to cool drafts after exercise.
6. Do not wash your dog immediately after exercising. Wait until your dog calms down before bathing. If caught in the rain, give your dog a warm bath quickly to avoid colds.
