Physical Characteristics of the Shih Tzu

Shih Tzu (detailed introduction)
The Shih Tzu’s ancestors were originally royal court pets with noble bloodlines, so they always proudly hold their heads high when walking. Although it is small in size, it is very sturdy, neither tall nor short, with solid bones, and overall appears very compact.
The ideal size of the Shih Tzu is a shoulder height of 9~12 inches. The head is round and wide, with a dome shape. The distance between the eyes is wide, proportional to the dog’s overall size — neither large nor small. The eyes are large and round, not protruding, giving a friendly look. The overall expression is warm and amiable. The ears are relatively large and covered with dense hair. The nostrils are wide and open. The nose, eye rims, and lips are black. When the lips are closed, the teeth and tongue are not visible.
The overall balance is harmonized without any exaggerated features. The backline is level, the body is short and sturdy, legs are straight with good bone structure, well-developed muscles, and thick paw pads. The hind legs have well-developed bones and muscles. Viewed from behind, the legs are straight, knees moderately bent, and the two legs do not touch each other.
The coat is double-layered, dense, and smooth. The hair on the top of the head is usually tied up with ornaments. The hair on the belly and bottom of the feet can be trimmed regularly.
The Shih Tzu has an elegant posture, smooth and fluid gait, walking in a straight line with head held high and chest out, giving an impression of nobility.
