Morphological Characteristics of Beagle
Beagle (Detailed Introduction)
The Beagle originates from the United Kingdom, with a size mostly around 16 inches (41 cm). In UK dog shows, Beagles exceeding 16 inches lose eligibility to compete. In the 19th century, Beagles were introduced to the United States for breeding. After American modification, most Beagles measure no more than 15 inches (about 38 cm), mostly maintaining around 13 inches (33 cm). Similarly, in American dog shows, Beagles exceeding this standard will lose eligibility.
Morphological Characteristics
Because Beagles are similar to Basset Hounds and the market is flooded with unscrupulous dealers, many Beagles have been crossbred with other breeds and falsely claimed as purebred Beagles to increase price, causing many victims. Therefore, the American Kennel Club and the American Beagle Club have especially set out many distinguishing features of Beagles for easier verification in the future.
Drooping ears: This can be said to be the biggest feature and selling point of the Beagle. The Beagle’s ears must not extend beyond the nose, and the lower edge of the ear is round and wide. The coat is primarily tricolor of yellow, black, and white.
Yellow: Distributed on the head, ears, upper parts of the limbs, and lower part of the tail.
Black: Mainly on the back, also the most recognizable sign to quickly identify a Beagle.
White: White is often emphasized because the previous method of using black on the back to identify Beagles has become obsolete over time. A standard Beagle must have the “seven whites,” meaning the front end of the nose, neck, lower parts of the limbs, and the tip of the tail must be white. Because the Beagle’s lower limbs are white, it is also said that "Beagles wear white socks."
Body size: About between 13 inches and 15 inches, classified as a standard medium-sized dog.
Body build: The abdomen should feel strong and muscular to the touch.
Tail: Except when sick, hungry, or in a bad mood, the Beagle’s tail is almost always raised upwards, with a curve like a sharp sickle.
