Is it Difficult to Train a Border Collie to Catch a Frisbee?

When it comes to amazing frisbee dogs, we definitely think of Border Collies (detailed introduction). Of course, Border Collies rank No.1 in dog breed intelligence, so they are smart and easy to train. Many other dog breeds can’t even learn to catch a frisbee, let alone compete. So is it relatively difficult to train dogs to catch a frisbee?

The answer is definitely yes. The skill of catching a frisbee is considered one of the more difficult training skills for dogs, not as simple as basic commands like sit, shake hands, or roll over. If sit and shake are one-star difficulty, catching a frisbee is definitely a five-star training activity. So with training being this difficult, are there any convenient training methods?

Although the best learning period for Border Collies is between 3-6 months, I do not recommend owners train their dogs to catch frisbees at this time. It's better to start after six months because the intensity of frisbee exercise is quite high, and many difficult movements can easily injure the young Border Collie if trained too early. Then choose a wide open space. First, place the frisbee and the Border Collie's food together; you can put food on top of the frisbee so the dog will eat from it and get used to the frisbee. After some days, start teasing her with the frisbee to make her excited to jump, but don’t give it to her yet. Then after some time, have someone stand opposite you at some distance and pass the frisbee back and forth. The dog will run back and forth trying to grab the frisbee. Occasionally give her a few chances to catch it; otherwise, if she cannot get it for a long time, she will lose interest.

Persevere with this training for a while. When you throw the frisbee, the dog will leap to catch it, and then you can use food to train the dog to run toward you. If the Border Collie brings the frisbee back to you, use food as a reward. Repeating this cycle of training is very effective.
