Introduction to the Pumi Dog
Pumi Dog

The Pumi dog belongs to the medium-sized herding dogs and originates from Hungary. It was initially used for herding but has recently developed into a pet dog. Today, the editor will briefly introduce this breed to everyone.
  1. Appearance
The head is quite narrow and long, with an elongated muzzle giving the head a very distinctive shape. The skull is relatively broad with an arch. From between the eyebrows to the tip of the nose is almost a straight line. The nose is narrow and black regardless of coat color. Lips are tightly closed. The jaw is strong, and the cheek muscles are pronounced. Eyes are slightly slanted with an appropriate distance between them, medium-sized, oval, and deep brown. The expression is lively and intelligent. Ears are erect with the top one-third bending forward. The neck is of medium length, slightly arched, muscular with no loose skin or wrinkles. The body is well-developed with tight skin. The topline is straight, the back is short and taut. The chest is straight, not very wide but quite deep. The ribs are slightly arched and flat. The abdomen is tight and tucked up. The tail is often curled over the back with longer ornamental hair. The forelegs are straight and parallel with a moderate distance between them. The hind legs are strong and muscular. The feet are round like cat feet with tightly packed toes; pads are elastic, nails strong, black or mouse gray. The coat is curly, not smooth or corded, about 4-7 cm long, curly, messy, and dense. Coat colors include solid gray, solid black, solid yellow, solid white, etc.
  2. Temperament
A very active terrier-type hunting dog with a calm personality. Very brave and somewhat alert to unfamiliar people. With discerning behavior, it is lively and expressive, always attentive to people wherever and whenever. Quite noisy, with a desire to act reflected in its overall appearance. For calmness without activity, the entire body keeps moving. Very active and ready in work posture. Shyness or calmness is not highly valued in this breed.
  3. Care
Owners of Pumi puppies must have sufficient free time because this is a very charming and beautiful small long-haired dog that requires regular grooming. The long coat needs to be brushed daily with a boar bristle brush. However, it does not need to be tied up like a Shih Tzu. In cold weather, bathing every 4-5 months is sufficient, but in hot summer, it needs a bath at least once a month. Coat cleanliness and glossiness should always be maintained, avoiding dirt to keep its beauty.
This breed naturally sheds once a year, usually between March and April, so no trimming of the undercoat is necessary. The Pumi loves exercise, especially accompanying the owner on walks, shopping trips, or park outings, always running around in front of and behind the owner. Appropriate exercise promotes better appetite, digestion, and physical strength.
Feeding the Pumi should focus on sufficient nutrition, providing about 150 grams of fresh meat daily, accompanied by roughly equal amounts of vegetable food or unsweetened or low-sugar hard biscuits and clean cool boiled water.
When breeding Pumis, avoid using close relatives as this can lead to loss of the breed’s elegant physique and beautiful coat. Claws should be trimmed timely to avoid damage to the owner’s clothing or body. The Pumi loves to play and is best kept in pairs for companionship and to lighten the owner's burden. During care, regularly monitor its mental state and appetite, and treat any illness promptly. Avoid overindulgence that may foster stubbornness and disobedience; instead, provide proper training and discipline.
  4. Uses
A terrier-type hunting dog suitable for hunting large animals. It has a highly developed sense of smell. When fighting wild beasts or small animals, it shows its true value. It is also an excellent pet suitable for indoor living. Sufficient exercise is essential. It excels as a family dog and is suited for canine sports.
The Pumi dog, whether for practical work or companionship, can become one of your chosen beloved pets.
