How to Train Dogs to Catch Frisbees Dog Frisbee Training Tips

Only after the dog masters the skill of catching food in midair can this training begin. During the training, you can use a ball to replace the food used in food-catching training. At this point, the dog’s motivation is no longer food, but the game. You can have the dog sit or stand, give the command "catch," and throw the ball upward. Since the dog has already mastered the game’s skill, it can often catch the ball easily. Then, have the dog come to your side and spit out the ball, and reward the dog. With frequent training, the dog’s eagerness to play increases, catching skills become more proficient, and it often jumps to catch the ball in the air. If the dog shows this response, you should give full encouragement and rewards, and encourage the dog during training to jump to catch the object, cultivating the dog’s timing of jumping and catching skills until the dog is proficient.

Next, train the dog’s ability to jump and catch while running. You can use a frisbee for training; the initial frisbee speed should be slower. You stand at the dog’s right front, throw the frisbee in front of the dog, and give the “catch” command. Most dogs will run quickly toward the frisbee and leap to grab it. If the dog succeeds, you should fully reward to stimulate the dog’s interest.

If the dog cannot catch it, repeat the training until the dog succeeds. As the dog’s ability improves, change directions and vary speeds to develop the dog’s catching ability.
