How to train a Papillon to come immediately How to train a Papillon to obey

How to train a Papillon to come immediately? Papillons are very smart, and also very close and friendly to people, so if you want to train a Papillon, it is relatively easy. For example, if you want to train your Papillon to come immediately when called, as long as we master the training methods and skills of the Papillon, enabling it to understand and remember faster, it can be trained quickly.

How to train a Papillon to obey?

  1. The purpose of this subject training is to make the dog develop obedience to lie down quickly and correctly according to commands and to maintain the ability to delay the lying down.

  2. The command “Lie down.”

  3. Hand signal: when commanding from the front, raise the right hand and then extend it forward horizontally with the palm facing down. For lying down on the left side, wave the right hand downward forward in front of the dog.

  4. Training methods and steps

Step one: condition the dog to the “Lie down” command and hand gesture.

Method one: The owner commands the dog to sit on the left side, steps forward with the right leg, bends the body forward downward, and then uses the right hand holding a piece of meat to lure the dog. When the dog shows response, feed the dog slowly moving the food forward and downward in front of its mouth, simultaneously issuing the command “Lie down,” and use the left hand to pull the dog’s collar forward and downward to stimulate. Under the lure of food and mechanical stimulation, the dog will perform the lying down action; once the dog lies down, promptly reward it with food. Pause briefly, then command the dog to sit again; as the conditioned reflex is gradually established, reduce or cancel the food and mechanical stimulation until the dog lies down completely according to the command and hand signal.

Method two: Command the dog to sit on the left side, the owner steps back with the left leg and kneels on one knee, reaches hands from the dog’s back to hold both front legs, and while giving the command “Lie down,” extends the dog’s front legs forward and lightly presses the dog’s shoulder blades with the left arm. Under mechanical stimulation, the dog will lie down. Use this method with timely food and pat rewards. This method is not suitable for dogs sensitive to skin.

Step two: command the dog to lie down from a distance and cultivate the dog’s ability to delay the lying down.

To command the dog to lie down from a distance, ask the dog to sit first, then the owner stands 1 meter in front of the dog facing it, holds the leash in the left hand, makes the hand gesture for lying down with the right hand, and issues the command “Lie down.” If the dog does not lie down, repeat the command and gesture, and pull downward forward on the leash to force the dog to lie down. When the dog can perform smoothly, gradually extend the command distance to 10 meters using the training leash. During this process, continuously consolidate the dog’s actions step-by-step; the distance should be a mix of near and far, flexibly combining the use of commands and hand signals according to training conditions.

Cultivating the dog’s ability to delay lying down uses the same method as delaying sitting. If the dog can stay lying correctly and quietly waiting for under five minutes after the owner moves beyond 20 meters out of sight, this is good.

  Step three: complicated environment training.

Once the dog’s lying down is well consolidated, you can gradually enter more complex environments for training. Early requirements should not be too high; as the dog’s adaptability slowly improves, increase difficulty.

When your Papillon is eight weeks old, you can start with some simple and easy training, teaching your Papillon how to obey and how to maintain hygiene. But one thing must be remembered: some Papillons might be easier to train because every Papillon’s temperament is different. So when you encounter difficulties, be patient. Starting training your Papillon to obey and maintain hygiene can never start too early.
