Training a Bichon dog first requires cultivating an emotional bond, establishing a certain foundation of affection. Only then can the dog adapt, trust, accept, and obey you. When a Bichon is not yet fully adapted to its new environment and owner, its defensiveness is particularly strong. If you act overly attentive or flattering, it will be even less likely to accept you and may completely shut itself off. Therefore, it’s best to sincerely care for it naturally; only then can it open its heart and become your good friend. Once the emotional foundation is established, training the dog becomes much more effective because dogs have strong and rich emotional awareness and will actively express their feelings. Most of a dog's instincts are influenced and controlled by its emotions.

When training a Bichon dog, you must trust the dog. During training, the dog will sense your emotions. The owner must not show distrust towards their dog; otherwise, the dog will truly believe it cannot do it, becoming very restrained. So you need to believe your dog can succeed; only then will the dog have enough confidence to perform well.

During training, you must have dedicated command words so the dog clearly understands the tone of the command. When commanding the dog to sit, you can use “sit” or the local equivalent as the command word. Once set, the command must not be changed casually so the dog clearly knows what to do. Of course, training Bichon dogs also requires special patience. Although Bichons are smart, it doesn’t mean they will always perform actions you teach immediately; patience is still needed to guide them.

When you feel the dog has learned an action, don’t assume it truly masters it or that the goal is achieved. Even if they have learned the action, if they don’t use it in practical life, it’s meaningless. Therefore, in addition to training them one-on-one, combine it with frequent practice in the real living environment. This way, the dog will develop good habits closer aligned with the results you want.
