Schnauzer (detailed introduction)

       Not only Schnauzers, every dog secretes tears from their eyes. If excessive tearing occurs over a long time, tear stains will form. There are many causes for excessive and prolonged tearing in dogs, such as a heavy-flavored diet, health problems, grooming issues, and certain special dog breeds (like Pugs, Shih Tzus) that are more prone to tear stains due to their physical structure. Knowing the causes of tear stain formation makes removal much easier.

       1. Diet

       If the dog's tear stains are caused by a heavy-flavored diet, the owner only needs to switch their food to a lighter flavor. In addition, the owner should ensure the dog has sufficient drinking water and avoid letting them eat from the dining table.

       2. Health Issues

       The following illnesses can cause tear stains in dogs: ear canal infection, nasolacrimal duct blockage, entropion (eyelid turning inward), and dacryoadenitis (tear gland inflammation). When the dog has any of these conditions, the owner should promptly take them to a veterinary hospital for treatment. Once the illness is cured, the excessive tearing will stop.

       3. Grooming Issues

       Excess hair around the dog's eyes can irritate them, causing continuous tearing. This issue is easy to detect and fix by trimming the hair around the dog's eyes.

       4. Breed Issues

       For breeds like Pugs and Shih Tzus, their nasolacrimal ducts have greater curvature. Even normal tear secretion may exceed the drainage capacity, causing tear stains. Currently, veterinarians generally recommend careful daily care combined with auxiliary medication.

       5. Other Issues

       There are topical and oral medications available on the market to remove tear stains. If owners want to use these, it is best to consult a veterinarian first about suitability.
