How to raise a Basenji dog? Basenji dogs have many skin folds, which easily harbor bacteria and cause scabies and other skin diseases, so special attention should be paid to daily cleanliness and hygiene, bathing more frequently in summer. In feeding management, the food supply must be appropriate. Too little will affect growth and development, losing its lively and cute appearance, even causing pathology; too much will cause obesity, making it dull and lazy, losing its agile and lively characteristics.

The Basenji’s daily feed should contain 300–350 grams of meat, supplemented with cereals, sugar-free biscuits, and other vegetarian foods, about the same amount as the meat. The meat should be cooked and cut into small pieces, mixed with the vegetarian food (cooked) and water before feeding. The meat must be fresh, and the cooking utensils and food bowls should be cleaned thoroughly to ensure food hygiene.

Basenjis should be supplied with clean drinking water 1–2 times daily, with increased amounts in summer. The kennel should be chosen in a windproof, dry, and clean place, and frequently cleaned and disinfected. Basenjis generally enjoy activity, so they should be taken for walks and allowed to run and jump freely every day. Appropriate exercise promotes growth, robustness, and health.

Basenjis should be regularly trained to develop good habits of obeying the owner’s calls and commands. They should understand not to use teeth or claws to tear clothes, curtains, sofas, or other household items, and should be taught to love cleanliness by not allowing dirt on their bodies and to urinate and defecate in designated places.

Every 5–7 days, Basenjis should have dental tartar, earwax, and eye discharge cleaned. Eyes should be washed regularly with warm water to prevent conjunctivitis and other diseases. Claws should be trimmed regularly to facilitate easy walking and avoid scratching humans. Meanwhile, daily care must closely observe for abnormal conditions, loss of appetite, loose stools, heat or excessive dryness of the nose pad, etc. If abnormalities or signs of illness appear, treatment should be taken immediately.
