How to Properly Train Dogs to Refuse Food

Border Collie
Dogs picking up food on the road is natural and not inherently wrong, but this behavior poses certain safety risks for dogs, so as dog owners, we have the responsibility to eliminate this safety hazard for them. Dogs scavenge food on the road mainly because some stray dogs are hungry, but this should not be an issue for domesticated dogs. Moreover, we know that most of the leftover "food" on the streets is not clean, and dogs eating it may harm their health. Therefore, proper refusal training is quite necessary.
1. Do not use hitting to correct this habit
Some dogs may still not obey even after repeated reinforcements, which may relate to the way we teach them. However, after seeing no results from repeated training, some owners might lose their temper and punish the dog with some "violence." But hitting is not a good training method for dogs; it only deepens the dog's fear. Of course, this does not mean you cannot "hit" the dog; we can use tools like a newspaper, which makes a loud noise but causes little harm, to discipline the dog and let them recognize their mistake.
