Yorkshire Terrier (Detailed introduction)

       Many owners say Yorkshire Terriers are timid dogs—they always seem to keep a distance from guests visiting the home and immediately bark at any sound of rustling leaves or the wind. Actually, rather than being timid, they are highly alert. So is there any way for owners to help Yorkshire Terriers become less timid?

       1. About the problem of strangers

       For owners, friends are close people, but for dogs who have never met the owner’s friends before, these people are all considered strangers. If the dog is not sure whether strangers pose a threat, it will not relax its vigilance toward them. Owners can first let their dogs become familiar with the scent of their friends. After they get to know each other, owners can have friends feed the dog some treats or play a game with the dog. Through this interaction, the dog will no longer keep distance from the friends.

       2. About the problem of sounds and movements

       Dogs’ hearing is very sensitive; they can clearly hear footsteps in the hallway, cars driving in the neighborhood, even residents talking downstairs. Most dogs gradually adapt to these sounds as they grow up, so owners need not worry too much about this issue. Additionally, sounds from household appliances like vacuum cleaners, washing machines, or range hoods may also frighten dogs. Owners need to let their dogs know from a young age that these appliances will not harm them. Once the dogs get used to them, they naturally will no longer be scared.

       Although Yorkshire Terriers may show fear or retreat when facing the two problems mentioned above, once their owners are bullied or their territory is invaded, they will fiercely attack without hesitation. Never underestimate them!
